About Julie Gautier:
Julie Gautier, born and raised on Réunion Island, discovered her passion for freediving and underwater filmmaking.
She combined her love for the sea with remarkable artistic talent, which allowed her to stand out in these fields.
Her freediving skills, honed in the crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean, laid the foundation for her cinematic work.
By exploring the ocean’s depths, Julie developed a unique perspective, blending art, sport, and storytelling. This fusion enabled her to create captivating visual works that tell powerful stories beneath the water’s surface.
Her artistic approach is driven by a desire to raise awareness of the marine environment and to challenge human limits, both physical and creative.
Julie Gautier distinguished herself as the French constant weight freediving champion in 2006 and 2007, reaching depths of -68 meters.
She achieved impressive depths, setting national records.
This discipline, which combines mental and physical strength, was the first arena where Julie demonstrated her mastery of the water and her
ability to push human limits.
Her success in freediving is not merely about athletic competition; it reflects a profound connection with the ocean.
This experience in freediving laid the foundation for Julie’s future artistic explorations, where she used her skills to create unique underwater visual works.
Julie Gautier’s transition from competitive freediving to underwater artistic expression is a testament to her evolution as both an artist and an athlete.
This transformation reflects her deep exploration of her relationship with water, turning the ocean into a canvas on which she expresses visual and emotional narratives.
Julie’s artistic journey reveals a fusion of the physical and the metaphorical, where each dive becomes a quest for beauty and meaning, expanding the boundaries of what underwater art can represent.
Inspired by the values of the lingerie brand Empreinte, Julie was given total creative freedom for her film L’Apesanteur, showcasing her vision in a fluid and evocative manner.
She also collaborated with renowned fashion designer Iris Van Herpen to create Carte Blanche. This sensual narrative highlights the power of the female body and its ability to challenge the status quo, embodying a strong and unapologetic femininity.
In 2009, Julie Gautier stepped away from competitive freediving to fully dedicate herself to filmmaking, focusing on projects such as Free Fall, Ashes & Snow, Ocean Gravity, and Narcose.
Her collaborations with renowned artists like Beyoncé, Raphaël, and Zazie have showcased her exceptional talent as an underwater filmmaker to a
broader audience.
Working with Beyoncé, Julie brought a striking visual dimension to the music video Runnin’ (456 million views), creating a piece that seamlessly blends emotional depth with underwater aesthetic beauty.
These various achievements demonstrate her versatility and her ability to adapt her unique skills to the diverse creative visions of artists.
Through these projects, Julie has not only showcased her technical expertise in freediving and cinematography but also her profound
understanding of visual storytelling and artistic expression.
